Growing up in a Republican town and being raised by conservative parents, my views on politics closely resemble the people I grew up with. I consider myself a Republican, but if Trump is the nominee for the Republican Party I will not be voting for him. He has absolutely no experience in government or military and is known only because of his wealth from real estate and being a corny reality-television star.
Throughout Trump’s campaign you witness his disqualifying “bullying” tactics on fellow candidates including fellow Republican nominee, Carly Fiorina. During a presidential debate he commented about her appearance saying, "Look at that face!" Trump said in a recent 2016 Rolling Stone interview referring to Fiorina . "Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?!". But the real question is do we want a childish president? The population in favor of Trump believe that his, “ I don’t care what people think” attitude will keep others honest. Trump supporters believe that his brash attitude could be a good thing for our country so we look powerful. People in favor of Trump look passed the way he words things and focus in on his “plans” to solve the real issues at hand like immigration, the tax plan on the deficit, and the Middle East etc. Trump’s plan is unfortunately backfiring because the only thing this nation is focusing in on is what horrendous thing is going to come out of Trump’s mouth next. Earlier this month I interviewed Brenda Flores, a registered Republican. Her being a fellow Republican I was interested on her thoughts about this years election and opinion on Trump. Starting off simple , I asked who she would be voting for if it was between Trump and Clinton as the final nominees. Flores sternly responded, “ I will not be voting for either I would rather vote for a third party alternative” and even added “ If Donald Trump is elected as President it will make the whole of America look like a joke. We need someone with experience and who really knows what they are talking about. But just because I don’t want Trump doesn’t mean I’m going to be voting for Hillary either. So I guess if there isn’t a third party elective I will not be voting” I do agree with Flores and I also believe if Trump wins the election he will totally change the dynamics of that party. The Republican Party’s traditions will quickly be changed into an angry bigoted one. The problem with Trump is that he doesn’t know how to address issues at hand without saying it in a “presidential” manner. Being presidential involves communicating a consistent message, having a gracious demeanor, and not flip-flopping on the issues. An example of when Trump “ flip- flopped” is on the opinion of Hillary Clinton in general. Obviously as we are getting closer to election-day it is looking like Clinton and Trump will be the two representing the Democratic and Republican party for election day. In a CNN politics article, “ 10 Donald Trump Flip-Flops” by author Jeremy Diamond Trump stated Clinton to be “ the worst Secretary of State in the history of the United States”. Four years ago prior to running Trump had previously and repeatedly heaped praise on Clinton, including in a March 2012 Fox News Interview Trump called Clinton "a terrific woman” and that "she really works hard and I think she does a good job.". This example goes far beyond just the issue of flip-flopping, it is clear that Trump doesn’t really mean what he actually says. He is obviously is just saying anything that will make himself look good to the people who will vote for him. What about the more serious government issues at hand? Trump has an idea to build a wall between Mexico and United States to help with immigration control if he wins the election. This idea has caused a lot of uproar, but even If he does win will this “wall” actually happen or will it just be another thing he said that he really didn’t mean? Trump is attracting the wrong kind of attention however; some say any attention is better than no attention. To what started off as almost a joke that a celebrity like Donald trump was running for president is now suddenly starting to become a little bit too real. As a country I guess we will find out how real this joke is on Tuesday, November 8th. |
